The IOM organisers have made the decision to ban the use of selfie sticks and pubilish this quite clearly on their website – rightly so! reading the site it states:
The organisers of the racing around the Billown Course in the Isle of Man, Southern 100 Racing have taken the decision to ban the use of ‘selfie sticks’ during practising and racing at the Isle of Man Steam Packet Southern 100 Diamond Jubilee International Road Races which take place on 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th July, 2015.
Chief Marshal, Dave Ali said:
‘The use of these and similar devices are both a distraction and a danger to riders,. ‘To have something like these stick extensions hanging over a wall or hedge, in a riders path, is an unthinkable idea.’
Mr Ali continued; ‘
There’s also the possibility of the camera or phone becoming detached and falling onto the track. ‘Please remember this while you’re enjoying the racing at this years Diamond Jubilee Southern 100.
‘Listen to the marshals, they’re there for everybody’s safety.’
Southern 100 Racing would also like to remind the Media, fans, enthusiasts and spectators that drones are not permitted due to close proximity of the Isle of Man – Ronaldsway Airport and that remote cameras can only be used by accredited media with authorisation of the Press Officer.
Those reasons all seem absolutely fair, and above board. Quite frankly the lengths that these riders go to, in providing us with such thirlling entertainment should be enough for you to appreciate.
The noise, the sounds, the smell and the buzzing atmosphere are what you’re there to soak up and indulge in should be enough! As far as photos go, there are plenty available from the acreditted media!
however there is always (at least one) person, who is will to endager not only riders and spectators, but the very event itself to get that amazing blurred shot on a phone camera.
Below are some photo’s of a spectator, who has ludicrously put all of the above at risk…..quite frankly we think the guy should be found and given a chance to explain his train of thought while doing this. If not shamed maybe even banned to set and example and outline the seriousness of his actions.
Be sensible guys, the TT is not a place for selfie sticks!
